Chiaki J. Konaka 小中千昭
Series composition and all thirteen TV scripts; game setting and the game's animated-part scenarios; AX text serial; some live-action and digital footage
Konaka came to anime from live-action horror video and special-effects TV, and calls himself a horror writer first. He grew up making 8mm films with his younger brother, director Kazuya Konaka, and lists 1970s films such as The Exorcist and Videodrome as his influences. For Lain he wrote all thirteen scripts between September 1997 and April 1998 with no overall plot, writing the first four in a rush, pausing, and then steering by Nakamura's storyboards; the series composition credit, he says, was only contractual. He coined the word Wired, named COS after Apple's abandoned Copland, filled the scenario book with technical footnotes, and personally shot and processed footage such as Layer 09's documentary. He ran a personal Lain page from 1998 to 2001 with dolls he sculpted, and in 2018 began the memoir blog welcome back to wired. With Nakamura and ABe he later developed Despera, serialized in Animage from 2009. He reused Alice, Reika and Juri across several works.
