Kishida adapted ABe's illustrations into model sheets, but Konaka stresses that his real role was far larger than his credit. According to Konaka, Kishida agreed to join after reading the first four scripts, spent about a month and a half on the layout of Layer 01's scene of ectoplasm rising from Lain's fingers, drew it himself, and through many nights quietly corrected other animators' key drawings to keep the cel animation ahead of the digital parts. For Layer 12 he called in star animator friends. He invented Lain's bear pajamas, which Konaka at first opposed; Nakamura explained them by noting that Kishida himself always wears sunglasses as a shield. Ueda found the bear childish but accepted it. Konaka calls him a genius who would never let poor work go out under his name. He went on to a long career as a character designer.
