Yasuyuki Ueda 上田耕行

Original concept and producer (credited as 'production 2nd'); main author of the PlayStation game's text and data

Ueda was a producer in Pioneer LDC's original-projects section who, by his own account, grew tired of making ordinary titles and wanted something personal and risky. He picked the team himself: ABe from his homepage, Konaka because he loved his writing, and Junji Nakahara from the Noel game, which Ueda had worked on at Pioneer and later left after clashes with its producer. 'production 2nd' is simply his old section name used as a label. Konaka calls him more than a producer: the original author, main concept maker and a kind of overall director. He shot most of the reference photos of power lines on a Leica, made many digital effects cuts himself and, for the game, typed the keyword links into Excel by hand. He says Lain's dark streak comes from him and ABe. He later produced NieA_7, Haibane Renmei and Texhnolyze with ABe, stayed at Geneon and NBCUniversal Japan, oversaw the 2010 Blu-ray restoration in person, and supervised the 2023 AI lain service. He has said he would approve a good fan-made sequel.
